Teen receives probation for killing 4 people during drunk driving accident

In Tarrant county, Texas, the district attorney is trying to put 16-year-old Ethan Couch behind bars. Couch drunkenly drove his truck with a .24 blood alcohol level and hit Brian Jennings, Shelby and Hollie Boyles, and Breanna Mitchell; killing all four, as reported by the Huffington Post. However, the reason why this story is still being talked about is because Couch’s attorney used “affluenza” as his defense, and Couch only received probation and treatment at a $450,000 treatment center after his trial. Couch has been in and out of trouble, but has never been punished by his parents or authorities; and according to Grio, under state juvenile law Couch would be released when he is 19 if he goes to prison now.

District Judge Jean Boyd gave Couch 10 years’ probation last Tuesday after a sentencing hearing in which Couch’s attorneys argued his wealthy parents coddled him into a sense of irresponsibility — an affliction one witness called “affluenza.” Prosecutors had asked for a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
Couch’s blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit and there were traces of Valium in his system when he lost control of his pickup, plowing into a group of people helping a woman whose car had stalled.

This case is one that is surprising many, since it’s not often you can murder four people and only receive probation as your consequence. Using affluenza as a defense probably surprised most people, and it was probably even more surprising that it worked. Even if Couch goes back to court and receives the maximum sentence, he will only serve until he’s 19, so only 3 years. Regardless, it appears at the moment Couch got away with murder, and apparently if you have enough money maybe you can get away with it.

Man kills himself and another at Reno hospital

Last night a suicidal man, who has yet to be identified, went on a shooting spree at a Reno, Nev. hospital, according to ABC News. During the attack the gunman managed to kill one other person and placed two in critical condition. Police are not identifying any of the victims, including the gunman, since they are still investigating what happened and who was involved. The hospital returned to normal two hours after the shooting.

One local resident said he was at the center for an appointment with his 3-year-old child when they encountered the man entering the building with a gun, possibly a shotgun.
“He wasn’t agitated or anything. He was just normal,” Vita Ozoude told KRNV-TV. But he said the gunman did say something to the effect of, “You better get out of here.”

As more details are coming out about this specific incident, something that seems a little random. The gunman possibly told a witness “you better get out of here” before he started shooting throughout the hospital; yet he still killed and injured other people, and warned another. When the motives of the gunman are eventually out in the open it will be interesting to see why he did what he did and why he chose to shoot at a hospital; a place where lives are suppose to be saved.

60-year-old man kills wife and sister in mercy killings

Wednesday morning 60-year-old Lance Anderson shot is dementia stricken wife and his comatose sister in an act police are describing as “mercy” killings, as reported by the SFGate. After the murders Anderson sat in the courtyard of his sister’s nursing home with his head down. Neighbors and friends are shocked by the murders, and have described Anderson as being very loving and caring towards his wife. No one knew what was actually going on within Anderson’s head. Anderson is being charged with both murders.

“He treated her like she was a jewel … because she was so fragile,” Gale Madrigal said about Anderson’s wife .
Anderson walked into the Country Villa Sheraton nursing facility in the North Hills area of Los Angeles shortly before 9:30 a.m. and shot his sister Lisa Nave in the head, police said.

Mercy killings is a huge subject to discuss. Some people would believe that if someone is in the states of Anderson’s wife and sister, it would almost be freedom to “mercifully” kill them. On the other side is the obvious argument, murder is murder across the board. Since this crime happened this morning more information is still coming out, but Anderson probably is not a horrible evil murderer; he more than likely reached the end of his rope, which was unfortunate for his wife and sister. They trusted him and he ultimately betrayed that trust by trying to help them and end their pain. Should mercy killings be allowed in America?
